Diary post

Diary post update

During lesson I told my class about my ideas that I had for my film, once presented I told them how I was unsure on either a romantic or action/ thriller genre. They gave me feedback and told me to do what I believe will be produced to look most realistic.

From their feedback I made my final decision and chose to do an action/ thriller/ horror opening. From this I was able to see an opening in my head a lot more clearer rather than a romantic, also I thought the actors I use will be able to act out that genre better as well as being able to use a range of interesting shot types.

Action/ thriller mood board.

This is my mood board full of ideas of what the opening of my film could possibly include and that I will use as well as it supporting the storyline that I'm going for. The majority of photos include a young girl who looks as if she is in trouble, realistically this is able to be created making use of dark settings but with a decent amount of light so that the footage is clear, with a young girl around 16-18 and two males.

Analysing Juno

Roughly 115 shots

The way that we can tell that it is aimed at a younger audience is the language used, they tend to swear a lot and aren’t as nice to each other, the actors are young just like the audience, the non- diegetic music that is played is young and different, it deals with issues that young people can relate to such as teenage pregnancies and relationships. It also shows how she talks to her parents and how she can talk to them about her problems, how they adapt to the issues. The settings used are everyday places for example the park or school. They use this because they want the audience to be able to relate to the situation and teenagers are familiar with the settings.

The types of camera shots that have been are a range between mid, close up and wide shots. Also they use a range of different shots to make the opening more interesting and engaging for the target audience. Therefore close up shots are used to show facial expressions, introduce characters and show important details. Mid shots are used to show relationships within the characters and also is good to show relationships within the surroundings (settings). Finally wide shots can be used to introduce the settings of the film, locations and introduce large groups of people.

The pace of editing used in the opening is slow fast then slow. The reason why is so that the audience establish narrative characters locations and can get an understanding of what the film is about, when it pace of editing increases during the middle of the trailer creates a more exciting and entertaining image for the audience, however as the pace of editing slows down again towards the end of the trailer allowing the audience to take in everything that they have seen and especially the information about when the film is going to be screened.

Shots:

Close up of Juno looking at the pregnancy test- This has been used to let the audience engage with Juno’s reaction, they need to see what she thinks of the situation and what she does next.

Mid shot of Juno walking towards the hallway- This lets the audience see more of the setting during the trailer; it also adds variety to the trailer as you don’t want too much of the same shot type.

Wide shot of Juno and her friend talking on the bench about the adoption with fizzy drinks –This has been used so that the audience can see exactly where they are and what is happening around them.

The proposal- Romantic comedy analysis.

The genre is introduced by two characters (male/female), they both live different lifestyles, but work at the same job. The female however is challenging stereotype because she has higher authority in the work place compared to the male, you can tell that it’s going to be a boss and employee relationship.

I can tell that the film is set in New York because of the of the buildings outside of the females window, you can see the type of buildings as the camera pans past her head while she’s on the running machine and its followed by yellow taxis . The forest start is normally associated with a horror film, but from the music you can tell that it isn’t a horror. The non- diegetic music is light, upbeat and soft which introduces the genre being quiet positive.

The woman is represented as strong, independent and bossy. Her appearance is neat and tidy; she is wearing a black suit which is ironed which is black and white, with her hair sprayed back perfectly. The way that the woman’s house is laid out is spotless; there is no mess anywhere which reflects her personality and her appearance a lot too. An example is when the woman goes into her kitchen and all the surfaces are spotless and everything is in its place.

On the other hand the male is the complete opposite. Even though he is again in the same everyday setting of his house, he is running late and rushes out of bed to get washed and dressed, whereas the female had already got up early and started the day off with exercise. Also his room is dark and in a mess, nothing seems to be in order for him. You can notice the difference between the positive of the woman and the negative of the man by the lighting, as she is up bright and early enhances how clean her house is as well as how dull his room is for how unorganised he is.

There are a range of wide shots during the opening of the proposal; this was done to introduce the setting, including mid shots to introduce the characters too.

All the staff sends E-mails to each other saying for example ‘it’s here’ and ‘the which is on her broom’ which shows that nobody in the work place likes her. You can tell by the way she walks in and everybody turns to do work as she struts through the office with a lot of negative attitude. The popping sound of the E-mail keeps it light hearted however again introducing the genre of the humour side to it.

It’s very clear that there is no relationship towards the two, however it follows the traditional ‘two opposites attract’ and one helpless person left out which would be the woman in the coffee shop who had already made the man’s orders ready for him and he skipped the line, he tells her that she ‘literally saved his life’, the gestures could suggest that she may be a secret admirer/ lover, which follows the usual storyline.

The subtitles order: Touchstone pictures, Mandeville films, Presents amans productions, Touchstone films, actors names.
